A man has died after falling from a cliff at Loch Scavaig on the Isle of Skye.

The unidentified male was walking in the Elgol area when he fell down the steep drop, sparking a major response from emergency services.

The male casualty was picked up by Mallaig Lifeboat and transferred to Elgol Pier yesterday afternoon but later died.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency received the distress call at 12noon to reports of a man at the bottom of a cliff and the local lifeboat crew, including Portree Coastguard Rescue Team, Police Scotland and Coastguard search and rescue helicopters from both Stornoway and Inverness were dispatched to the scene.

A spokeswoman from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “HM Coastguard has been coordinating a rescue after a man was reported to be at the bottom of a cliff at Loch Scavaig, Isle of Skye earlier today.

“Portree Coastguard Rescue Team, Mallaig lifeboat and HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopters from Stornoway and Inverness were all sent to the scene along with Police Scotland after a call was received at midday today.

“The man was taken on board the boat and taken to Elgol Pier.”

A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a man has died after falling while walking in the Elgol area of the Isle of Skye.

“His next of kin are aware. Emergency services attended in the Camasunary Bay area after the incident was reported shortly before midday on Wednesday, May 30.”

Several miles down the coast, Police in Lochaber are continuing to appeal for information about a 65 year-old hillwalker who was reported missing in Lochaber.

Ian Stalker from Edinburgh, failed to return home from his trek in the Sgurr a Choire-bheithe area of Knoydart and hasn’t made contact since.

He is described as being 6ft, balding with some grey hair and brown eyes and is likely to have been wearing black walking trousers, brown leather boots, either a red or blue fleece and using walking poles.

Sergeant Keith Almond said: “We are urging any other hillwalkers who have been in the Knoydart area and believes they have seen Mr Stalker or a man matching his description to get in touch urgently.”
