Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) has successfully traced two climbers who were missing overnight in bad weather.

The hillwalkers were found just after 9.30am and are currently being walked off Braeriach – Britain’s third highest mountain – after the alarm was raised at about 6.15pm on Thursday.

During the search another two climbers were found who were also in distress and according a social media post by the rescue team “they were evacuated from hill suffering from hypothermia.”

After that the search for the original pair continued into the night with the Coastguard Rescue helicopter deploying additional personnel and support.

The operation was to be ramped up today with Braemar and RAF MRTs joining the efforts to locate the climbers with concerns whether the Coastguard helicopter could take part due to the low cloud cover.

However, around 9.30am the walkers were located with the latest word being that they are being walked off the mountain down to the MRT base – there are no details on their condition.

In the most recent online post by the Cairngorm MRT the team confirmed: “Missing persons found by CMRT. No current update on their condition available. Our thanks as ever to Coastguard Rescue Aircraft. 951 & 199.”
