Grant demands end to Stromeferry uncertainty

A Highlands MSP has written to the Scottish Government’s transport boss to demand an end to uncertainty over the future of the “gateway to the islands”.

Essential works are taking place on the rockface to the west of the avalanche shelter on the A890 between Achnasheen and Auchentyre at the Stromeferry bypass.

Intermittent road closures are expected to continue until late November.

But Labour politician Rhoda Grant fears the work could linger on for longer, and has contacted Michael Matheson asking for answers over future plans for the route.

There will be a community meeting in Lochcarron Village Hall on Thursday to discuss the issues and frustration with the work being carried out there, which Ms Grant urged as many people as possible to attend.

She said: “I am fully aware of the current works being carried out at the Stromeferry bypass and equally aware that there can be delays of up to three hours.

“On Thursday there will be a drop in session between 2pm and 5.30pm and a presentation between 6pm and 7pm. Thereafter there will be a general question time.”

Ms Grant went on to express her concerns over long-term plans for the area, which she said appeared to have been “kicked into the long grass”.

She said: “This saga has gone on too long.  In my view this route should be a trunk road as it is the gateway to the islands via Skye and South West Ross.

“Over the period since the road was opened there has been many landslides and near-misses. It is an absolute miracle that no one has been killed over the last 48 years.

“I have written to the Transport Secretary and asked him to move this issue up his ‘to do list’ and bring to an end the uncertainty caused to motorists and parents of school children who use this route every day wondering if they will be struck by landslide or falling rocks.”

A Transport Scotland spokesman said: “Transport Scotland is reviewing the transport appraisal, prepared on behalf of Highland Council, which considers a number of potential options for the A890 at Stromeferry.

“These options include a northerly and southerly bypasses and an option for a potential on-line solution.

“Transport Scotland continues to provide technical advice to Highland Council on the appraisal process, however, as the A890 is a local road, responsibility for a decision to upgrade or improve the route ultimately lies with the council.”
