Search and rescue teams were called into action earlier today as the Coastguard received a Mayday call from a vessel sailing from Tobermory to Staffa.

Tobermory lifeboat was joined by Coastguard helicopter Rescue 199 from Prestwick and coastguard rescue teams from Tobermory and Craignure in searching for the stricken vessel.

A Coastguard spokeswoman said: “We received a call around 1.30pm after a Mayday call was broadcast stating the vessel had lost power and was heading onto rocks and the shore. One person was on board.

“Local vessels in the vicinity, including the Voe Jarl, offered their assistance alongside the Cal Mac ferries Loch Tarbert and the Clansman.

“The Tobermory lifeboat and Rescue 199 conducted a shoreline search from Tobermory down to Staffa with the coast rescue teams from Tobermory and Craignure heading to a vantage point to conduct their search.”

At about 2.45pm, both the Tobermory lifeboat and Rescue 199 saw a red flare just off Caliach Point which they investigated, subsequently locating the casualty.

They were airlifted to land and checked-over by paramedics but were found not to have sustained any injury.

Attempts to re-float the 8.4 metre Redbay Stormforce vessel are expected to be made in the coming days.
