Lerwick man named as victim of house fire

Ross Grant.
Ross Grant.

Police have named the man who died in a house fire in Shetland almost two weeks ago as 48-year-old Ross Grant from Lerwick.

Emergency services were called  to the property at Burns Lane shortly after midnight on Sunday, February 24, following a report of a well-established blaze.

The flames ripped through the home before being extinguished by firefighters. Tragically, Mr Grant was found dead inside the property.

Members of the public who had been passing at the time made valiant attempts to save him.

The identity of Mr Grant had been known locally but was not released by police until yesterday. He worked for Nortruck Services Limited at Arlanda, Gremista.

Inquiries into the fire are ongoing but there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

A police spokesman said: “A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal as is standard in such cases.

Four fire crews attended the blaze – two from Lerwick, one from Sandwick and one from Bixter – and the crews successfully put out the blaze in the two-storey building.

Police thanked the members of the public who tried to save Mr Grant.

Chief Inspector Lindsay Tulloch said: “I know that some members of the public tried their best at the scene to save the person involved and I would like to thank you for your brave efforts.

“Inquiries are ongoing in conjunction with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service into the cause.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident.”

Councillor John Fraser, who represents the Lerwick North ward, said: “At this tragic time, everybody’s sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Mr Grant.

“We would like to commend the efforts of the emergency services and the members of the public who tried valiantly but sadly in vain to avoid this tragic loss.

“There were people who entered the building and tried to rescue him but sadly they were unable to do so due to the heat.”
