A Holyrood committee is visiting Skye later this week, where islanders will have the opportunity to deliver their views and opinions at an open question and answers session, followed by a formal committee meeting.
Members of the Equalities and Human Rights Committee will visit Portree on Friday as part of its consideration of a legislation change surrounding the physical chastisement of children.
Within the changes, suggested by John Finnie MSP of the Green Party, hitting, such as slapping and smacking with a hand or an implement, would be banned with the aim of the new bill to “help bring to an end the physical punishment of children by parents and others caring for or in charge of children”
Members of the committee are gathering on Skye to hear from faith groups prior to the determination of any potential changes.
Lochaber, Skye and Badenoch MSP Kate Forbes urged constituents to get along and have their voices heard over the matter.
She said: “In a democratic society, everybody should have the opportunity to make their views known.
“The committee is coming to Skye and I would encourage all constituents to go and speak to MSPs.
“I am not a member of this committee and I have no formal role, but I do want to encourage everybody to take the opportunity to meet MSPs and speak to them about the legislation.
“I’ve had a lot of people contacting me with questions about what these legal changes could mean for parents and so this is constituents’ opportunity to give evidence on their personal views and experiences.”
The event is to take place at the Fingal Centre in Portree from 3.15pm, with a formal committee meeting scheduled to begin at 4pm.
