Motorists travelling over the sea to Skye are to face delays from next week for roadworks.
A £600,000 maintenance project gets underway to upgrade essential components of the iconic Skye Bridge crossing.
The 1,600-metre-long route consists of two bridges with both requiring the installation of brand new expansion joints.
The expansion joints are essential components of the bridge and can move by up to 24cm during changes in temperatures in both summer and winter.
Work is scheduled to get underway next Monday and is to last for eight weeks.
In order to protect the workforce and keep motorists safe, temporary traffic lights are to be installed at various checkpoints along the crossing.
Pedestrians walking the bridge to the Misty Isle will be diverted onto the opposite side of the bridge.
Eddie Ross, Bear Scotland’s North West representative, said: “These essential maintenance works will help ensure that both bridges in the iconic Skye Crossing are functioning properly and to a safe standard, meaning that they can continue to function as a key route to Skye.
“The traffic management arrangements will help ensure the protection of our teams as well as motorists during the project, and our teams will do all they can to ensure any disruption to road users is minimised.
“Pedestrians should follow the footway restriction signs that are in place for their safety.
“We encourage road users to plan their journey in advance and our team will do all they can to complete the project as quickly and as safely as possible.”
