Police revoked one person’s driving licence and issued three others with warnings as they performed random roadside eyesight checks in a north town.

Officers in Wick stopped 126 drivers and asked them to carry out a test – with one found not to meet the required standard.

The motorist had their licence revoked and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

Three other drivers were issued with warnings relating to the standards of their driving.

Drivers are required under the Road Traffic Act to be able to read a number plate from a distance of 65ft.

A police spokesman said: “We are committed to reducing road casualties through influencing driver behaviour.

“It is the responsibility of drivers to ensure that their eyesight meets the minimum requirements.

“If a driver has concerns about their eyesight, then they should contact their doctor or optician and make an appointment to get their eyesight checked for peace of mind.

“In addition, if any family members or friends have concerns about someone who drives with defective eyesight, have a conversation with them about it.

“We know it is a sensitive subject but the potential consequences of driving with defective eyesight could be serious.”
