Searches continue for man missing in Wester Ross after nearly two months since last sighting

A renewed appeal to help trace a Yorkshire man missing in the Highlands has been issued by a local rescue leader, two months on from his last sighting.

Martin Rhodes, from Halifax, was last seen heading off for a walk in the Fisherfield Munros of Wester Ross on May 1 at approximately 8.30am.

At the time of his disappearance, police searchers expressed their “increasing concern” for the wellbeing of Mr Rhodes, who was described as being of slim build, approximately 5ft 4ins, and with short brown hair.

Searches were first mounted in the Kinlochewe area at the beginning of May, involving the Torridon and RAF mountain rescue teams and the Inverness-based coastguard search and rescue helicopter.

Members of the Torridon and Dundonnell mountain rescue teams went out searching in the following days, alongside the Search and Rescue Dogs Association and a coastguard helicopter, however, no traces of Mr Rhodes were discovered.

Yesterday, Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team leader Donald Macrae urged walkers in the area to keep their eyes peeled and to report anything that would aid their search efforts.

He said: “Martin remains very much on our minds and that of his family and friends.

“Despite intensive searches over large mountainous areas we have been unable to locate Martin.

“Our search area is extremely remote; four hours on foot from the nearest road just to get to the start of where we need to search.

“We have searched the main routes and are now spreading out into more challenging terrain which can require technical climbing.”

He added: “Local weather in the area has been poor with low cloud and at times wintry conditions, these have hampered our search efforts.

“It is hoped to make further searches this coming week, but this is dependent on the weather.

“We would continue to urge walkers to the area to be aware of seeing or finding anything that might help us locate Martin and bring him home.”
