A north community is in mourning after a popular crofter was killed by a car.
The woman, named locally as Linda MacGillivray, died near her home at Strontian, in Lochaber, on Sunday afternoon.
It is understood the 63-year-0ld was hit by a Honda CRV parked on a steep slope at Scotstown after it rolled away with no-one in the driver’s seat.
Ms MacGillivray, who was originally from the Isle of Mull, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that a woman has died following an incident involving a vehicle in the Strontian area of Lochaber.
“The incident happened on an unclassified road at Scotstown around 2pm on Sunday, September 1.
“The 63-year-old woman died at the scene after being involved in a collision with a Honda CRV car.
“No other vehicles or people were involved.”
It emerged that, five years ago to the day, the crofter began a battle back to health after receiving a kidney from a stranger.
Councillor Mary-Jean Devon, from Mull, said the whole community would be grieving for Ms MacGillivray, she said: “My sympathy goes to her partner Dochie, her daughter Laura and the whole family.
“She was an exceptional woman who battled her kidney condition with true islander spirit. The television documentary on her illness and her recovery is part of her legacy.
“Her father was a farmer who had a farm on Mull, she lived on the island until she had to move to the mainland to be closer to the Belford Hospital for her dialysis.
“She was given a new lease of life after the transplant and everyone was so delighted for her. She always had a smile on her face.
“It is so sad that she has died in such tragic circumstances. Everyone will still be in shock.”
A local woman, who did not want to be named, said: “This is a tragedy. Linda was a popular woman in the village and she always had a good word to say.
“A number of locals were called to help, and the whole area is in mourning today.”
Road policing sergeant David Miller said: “Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this difficult time.
“We have spoken to a number of people already in connection with this incident but if you feel you have information which could help please call 101.”
An earlier version of this story said that it was understood that Ms McGillivray had been trying to stop the car when it struck her. The family have since made clear that is not what happened.
