Two climbers have been taken to hospital after being rescued in separate incidents in the Highlands.

Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team said two people were caught up in an avalanche in Ben Nevis’s Number Five Gully yesterday afternoon.

After speaking to the climbers it became clear that only one of the climbers was injured, while the other walked away.

The injured climber was flown to Belford Hospital, suffering what rescuers described as a “nasty leg fracture”.

A second climber was later rescued after falling on Aonach Mor.

The rescue team were in the middle of the operation on Ben Nevis when they were alerted about the second climber.

They had fallen in the area between the Aonach Mor and Carn Mor Dearg.

The rescue helicopter was able to assist in the second operation.

A statement from Lochaber MRT said: “Thankfully, R151 managed to get in between the squalls and lift the casualty directly out prior to transfer to the hospital.

“So once again a massive thanks to R151 for saving us another all-nighter and to our colleagues from Tayside and Glenmore for the assistance, very much appreciated peeps.

“And good luck to the two casualties in their recovery.”

The condition of the second casualty is not yet known.
