A Highland community is seeking bids to transform a garden area and create new walking and cycling routes.

The Kingussie Community Development Company has secured £57,000 from the Town Centre Funding Project, managed by Highland Council, towards the £170,000 proposal for Gynack Gardens.

Its vision includes an area for local events, a direct link to the primary school, bike shelter and cycle maintenance post, as well as being part of the national cycle network.

A contract with landscape architects TGP has taken the project to the tender stage, with bids due by 15 May.

Council convener and local councillor Bill Lobban said: “I am delighted the council has been able to financially contribute to this important project.

“There is no doubt that it will have a positive impact.

“The grant from the Scottish Government has come at a vitally important time as we seek to reinvigorate our town centres and high streets after the economic damage of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Kenny Deans, one of those behind the project, added: “Although the process has taken us slightly longer than hoped, I believe the end result will justify the time and commitment from all the parties involved.

“There are exciting times ahead”.

The package includes in kind match funding from the Cairngorms National Park Authority, as well as support from Sustrans’ Places for Everyone programme.
