25 young footballers are to benefit from the Keep Scotland Active initiative.

Young footballers in Thurso are being given the tools to succeed as part of a local sports initiative.

Thurso Football Academy has teamed up with Rangers FC to provide dozens of kids with kit and tips to help them succeed on the pitch.

A total of 25 local children between the ages of three and 15 will be given footballs, water bottles and a training drills booklet as well as access to three online classes being delivered Coerver Coaching Scotland.

More than 80 youngsters have already signed up for the scheme which is being delivered as part of the Keep Scotland Active initiative.

Alyn Gunn, head of coaching for Thurso Football Academy, hopes it will help youngsters develop a passion for the sport.

He said: “We want them to be out playing and we want children to participate in sport.

“What we have discovered with this is there is a big interest in football. By the time this closes, we are expecting over 100 applicants and that’s fantastic for the Highlands.

“It shows there is an appetite for getting kids active and for football in general and we are delighted with that.”

The initiative has been made possible through collaborations with Baillie Windfarm Community Fund, Statkraft, Coerver Coaching Scotland, Rangers FC and Armour Flex.

Registration closes on June 30, with each winner picked from a hat.

The remaining entrants will able to access the drills booklet online.
