Isle of Gigha

An innovative project worth more than £300,000 is to get underway on Gigha in a bid to encourage visitors to stay for longer.

The formation of a new campsite, complete with a new office block, wash-up, toilet and shower facilities, is being proposed by the Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust (IGHT) as the trust also seeks to support local residents and businesses on the island.

A contractor is currently being sought to bring the project to fruition.

The project, which will create enough space for 15 camping pitches and 10 motor home pitches, will address an accommodation shortage and make it the island’s first official camping site.

Gigha beach ferry slip and the Activity Centre, with the Campsite to be located directly behind.

As the island has grown in popularity in recent years, strain has also been placed on infrastructure with instances of indiscriminate camping blocking the islands only scenic single-track road, much to the frustration of locals.

Through its subsidiary company Gigha Trading Limited, IGHT has decided to implement the action as part of its efforts to boost the social and economic development of Gigha.

A total of £135,000 of funding has been secured from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) with £171,000 granted from the Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

The campsite is hoped to open in spring 2021, with interested parties having until July 17 to register their interest via the Public Contract Scotland website.
