More than 9,000 people descended on Fort William at the weekend for the Mountain Bike World Cup.

Hotels and bed and breakfast establishments were fully booked, while long queues formed at shuttle bus stops around the Nevis Range area.

Fans flocked to the slopes of Aonach Mor to watch the 300 competitors. The British athletes once again gave the fervent home support plenty to cheer about.

Director of event organisers Rare Management, Mike Jardine, said: “We’re really pleased.

“We’ve had a lot of sunshine and everyone has had an absolute ball.

“It continues to be the benchmark for international mountain bike competitions without doubt.

“Every year, we have the best crowd in the world.

“The riders feed off the response from the fans and every single rider has received a big cheer, but when the Brits came down, they blew the roof off the place.”

He said there were more than 7,000 spectators on Saturday, with more than 9,000 attending on Sunday.

Mr Jardine said: “Fort William is a town of about 9,000 people, so we’re effectively doubling the size.”

He added that the shuttle service to ferry spectators from Fort William had worked very well.

He said: “This year was the first year we’ve used the Tesco car park for a park and ride service and it seems to have been very successful.”

Lochaber Chamber of Commerce chairman, Don Hind said: “The great success of this weekend proves once again that Lochaber is a world-class destination as well as outdoor capital of the UK.

“We had a large influx of visitors, not only for the mountain biking, but for various other events.

“The business sector responded to the challenge very well in meeting the needs of our visitors and gave the excellence of service they have come to expect.”
