Coronavirus cluster on Western Isles doubles as public urged to follow rules

A coronavirus cluster on the Western Isles had doubled since yesterday – prompting calls for the public to follow the rules.

The outbreak on South Uist has now reached 14 cases, an increase on the seven announced in recent days.

Health bosses on the islands confirmed that more tests were under way so the number could increase even more.

All schools in Uist have been shut for the next three days as a precaution until test results “give a clearer picture” according to the council.

NHS Western Isles chief executive Gordon Jamieson described the increase in cases as “significant.”

He said last night: “We have unfortunately had a significant increase in the number of positive Covid-19 cases in South Uist, we now have 14 positive cases with further tests being processed.

“I’m appealing to you to please follow the rules, we must get this outbreak under control and suppressed.

“Please limit your contact with other households, please wear face masks and face coverings and physically distance.

“Please wash your hands and take care of your respiratory hygiene.”

Cothrom Nursery in South Uist was closed on Friday until further notice after staff there were identified as close contacts and asked to self-isolate for 14 days.

A’Chridhe Uile Naomh (TACUN) care home in South Uist suspended admissions, visiting and discharges after staff there were identified as close contacts.

All staff and residents will be tested for the virus.
