Hopes that Highland road closed by landslip will reopen today

The road is closed at Melvich, Helmsdale and at the junction of the B871 at Kinbrace.

Work is underway to clear the Lochcarron to Kyle road in Wester Ross after it was blocked by a large landslide at Stromeferry and it is hoped that it will reopen later today

The landslip, which is about 165 yards west of the avalanche shelter, happened early yesterday morning.

The A890 was then closed between Ardnarff and Attadale, leaving drivers facing a 133-mile diversion, via Inverness.

A Highland Council spokeswoman today said the situation was currently being assessed with a view to reopening the road this afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Old Military Road is still being used as a diversion around the major landslide on the A83 Tarbet to Campbeltown road at the Rest and Be Thankful.

A spokeswoman for trunk road contractor Bear Scotland said: “Removal of debris from the road commenced last night with over 200 tonnes removed. This operation recommenced at first light.”

She added that an additional specialist excavator with a 53ft reach arrived on site in the early hours of this morning.

She said: “This will be used to remove material from the slope, which has been retained by the debris fence, and will be working along with two other large excavators on site within the confined area.

“The debris fence successfully held over 1,000 tonnes of material, including boulders some of which were the size of a car.

“The clearance operation will continue throughout the day and a clearer indication of the overall timescale will be given later today when the ongoing situation has been analysed by our geotechnical engineers and operational staff.”

She added that the Old Military Road would continue to operate through the day as clearance work progressed and pointed out that this would add between 15 and 45 minutes to journey times between Tarbet and Inveraray due to the convoy system in operation.

All the other previously affected sections of the A83 are operating as normal today.
