Female polar bear makes herself at home in the Highland

The recently arrived Highlands polar bear is certainly not going to go hungry – after she and her male suitors were donated a year’s supply of salmon.

Victoria, the UK’s only female polar bear, moved into her new home at the Highland Wildlife Park in March.

And now she has been gifted a year’s supply for her favourite meal from Wester Ross Fisheries.

The company will supply whole salmon to feed Victoria and the park’s two male polar bear Walker and Arktos throughout the year.

Una Richardson, head animal keeper at Highland Wildlife Park said: “We are extremely grateful to Wester Ross Fisheries for supplying us with salmon for our polar bears.

“It is really wonderful when local businesses decide to support our organisation and the conservation work we do. I know the bears are tremendously pleased about receiving the salmon, as it is one of their favourite foods.”

“Victoria has settled in very well since coming to Highland Wildlife Park and I think the partnership with Wester Ross Fisheries is a great way to celebrate her arrival at her new home.

“She is very happy and particularly loves rolling in the mud, so people are always saying how she looks more like a brown bear than a polar bear.”

Victoria has her very own enclosure which is completely separate to male polar bears Walker and Arktos, who have a large bachelor pad at the other side of the Park.

This allows the park to reflect the behaviour of polar bears in the wild, where males and females only come together to mate.

Victoria is the only female polar bear in the UK and it is hoped that she will breed with Arktos, the older and genetically more important male, when the two bears are introduced next spring.

Wester Ross Fisheries is the oldest owner-operated salmon farm in Scotland.

Their salmon comes from three seawater sites in Loch Kanaird, Loch Broom and Little Loch Broom.
