Mountain rescue leader appeals for information on hillwalker missing for a week

Fresh appeals have been made for information to help the search for a missing hillwalker in the Highlands.

Robin Garton, of Wiltshire, has not been seen since last Friday when he checked out of his accommodation in the Glencoe area.

It is believed that he went walking nearby but no trace of the 69-year-old has yet been found despite extensive searches after he was reported missing on Monday.

Mr Garton was due to meet friends in the Kinlochewe area on Sunday but failed to arrive.

Police found his car, a black Volkswagen Passat estate, at the Achnambeithach car park off the A82 by Loch Achtriochtan.

Yesterday Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team leader Andy Nelson estimated that 550 man hours had gone into the search, which has focused on Aonach Eagach ridge where Mr Garton had indicated he was heading for.

Searches have also been carried out in the Bidean nam Bian, Stob Coire nam Beith and Stob Coire nan Lochan areas of Glencoe, all without success.

Mr Nelson said: “Searches will continue each day but basically we need more information to help us narrow down the area where we need be looking.

“Conditions have been perfect all week so the areas where we’ve searched we’re confident we have done them as well as we can.

“That said there is a lot of technical and very steep, challenging ground to cover.”

He added: “We would ask anybody who was out in the area on Friday or since to get in touch if they think they’ve seen Mr Garton.

“He’s quite a tall guy and people say hello to each other in the mountains so I’m sure someone will have seen him out there.”

Yesterday members of Glencoe MRT continued their search, along with police dog handlers and the Search and Rescue Dogs Association.

Specialist police search officers were also involved.

A larger scale search is planned today on lower ground around the ridge, which Mr Nelson said is currently heavily covered with vegetation.

Mr Garton is described as 6ft 2in tall and slim to medium build.

He has fair hair which is slightly balding and occasionally wears glasses.

It is not known what he was wearing.

Anyone who has seen Mr Garton or has any information should contact police on 101.
