Older north residents invited to create “ceilidh play in a day”

Older residents in the north Highlands have been invited to join a group of actors to create “a ceilidh play in a day”.

Inspired by the Dundee Rep’s current tour of the iconic The Cheviot, The Stag and the Black, Black Oil, the theatre’s Beautiful People group will spend Wednesday in Tongue, Sutherland.

Beautiful People is Dundee Rep’s over-55s company, comprising 20 members who meet regularly.

The Tongue and surrounding communities are invited to spend the day with the group, sharing stories and creating a show for performance later that evening in Tongue Village Hall.

Suzi Morrice, of Dundee Rep’s creative learning team, said the idea for the “ceilidh play in a day” emerged following the decision by the Rep to take renowned Scottish play The Cheviot, The Stag and The Black, Black Oil on tour around Scotland this autumn.

She said: “The Cheviot was first toured around the Scottish Highlands in 1972, and made its comeback at Dundee Rep last year.

“When the decision was made to take it on tour this year, we thought that this would be a great opportunity to tie it in with Luminate, which celebrates creativity, shares stories of ageing and explores what it means to all of us that our society is ageing.

“The show will feature movement, song and drama, drawing on the experiences of people from very different communities but with a shared desire to create.

“The day itself will be fun, informal and highly energising using a range of drama and theatre techniques, and will conclude with a performance which will be open to local residents.

“We are so excited to be taking this work to Tongue. I have felt such a sense of community from all my communications with local partner agencies.”
