Highland substation plans has “already resulted in significant wasted costs to the public purse”

Campaigners opposed to an electricity substation being built on their doorstep have accused Highland Council of failing to keep it abreast of the project.

The authority recently called off a rearranged site visit to the location, at Garbole near Tomatin, because too few councillors were available.

The Save Strathdearn campaign fiercely objects to the prospect of SSE’s plans for a 40ft tall facility at a local beauty spot.

A site visit last month ended in farce as many of the 27 councillors who took part complained it did not get them close enough to fairly judge the planning application.

It was then rescheduled for this week but has now been shelved.

Campaign spokeswoman Pat Wells said: “We’ve not received any official notification regarding the cancellation. It’ll be interesting to learn the reasons.

“This sorry saga has already resulted in significant wasted costs to the public purse. It’s also stressful for the community and those who object to this proposed major development in an unspoilt glen.”

A spokeswoman for Highland Council said: “We’re in the process of writing to third party interests and hope at the same time to also provide them with information regarding a revised meeting date.”

A spokesman for SSE said: “We went through a rigorous development process before submitting the proposal taking into account technical, environmental and economic considerations.

“This included consideration of feedback from the local community which has influenced the proposed substation location and design.

“A landscape and visual assessment of the proposal was provided to the council as part of the planning application. We have now provided additional visual information as requested by the council and we look forward to hearing the decision on our proposal in due course.”

Due to “a low level of business” the council’s south area planning committee meeting scheduled for November 1 has also been cancelled.
