Highland mountain path to re-open following major rockfall

A popular Highland mountain path will reopen today (SAT) almost seven weeks after a major rockfall blocked the route.

Several massive boulders crashed onto the Nevis Steall Gorge path in Glen Nevis near Fort William last month caused by part of one of the buttresses on 2,290ft Meall Cumhann breaking free.

Conservation charity the John Muir Trust said yesterday (FRI) that while safety work above the path was complete, repairs to the path itself would continue for several weeks.

Anyone visiting should be prepared for short delays if the path team is moving or positioning rocks.

Alison Austin, the trust’s Nevis land manager, said: “A team from local specialists Stonescape will spend a few weeks making repairs.

“We’re able to open the path again but would ask anyone using it to follow all safety instructions and advice given by the team on the ground.”

The clear-up, costing about £30,000, was thanks to the generosity of JMT supporters and members.
