Police have issued a security warning to residents in Caithness about potentially suspicious behaviour.
People in the far north have reported unfamiliar people and vehicles spotted around properties and outbuildings in the area.
It is thought that these individuals might be involved in wildlife crime such as illegal hare coursing.
People are now being warned that dark winter nights present a prime opportunity for criminals.
North wildlife crime officer Constable Daniel Sutherland said: “It’s important not to present as an easy target by considering improvements to security around your home and buildings and letting police know about any suspicious persons or vehicles, regardless of how insignificant you think it may be.
“Any information provided by the public is greatly appreciated and may lead to the final piece of a jigsaw that allows for a successful prosecution.”
“In addition, where suspected wildlife crime is concerned I urge anyone with information to come forward to police.
“Illegal hare coursing is a significant rural crime which can involve the wider criminal network, which also targets the valuables and livelihood of rural home owners and businesses.”
