A rural watch scheme has been launched in an Argyll community.

Police say the varied communities of Glenorchy and Innishail means it is ideally suited to the scheme.

Dalmally-based Constable Darren Miller said: “I am very excited to present rural watch to the residents within the Glenorchy and Innisahil community.

“Rural watch presents an opportunity for police to interact with local community members in a pro-active and inclusive way to ensure the safeguarding of our neighbours and our property.

“Community spirit is strong within the local area and it is hoped the rural watch scheme will reinforce those ties and promote a vigilance within the area that will serve as a deterrent to would be criminals.”

Rural watch is similar to a neighbourhood watch scheme and allows police to alert members about crime in their area, allowing people to pre-empt any criminal behaviour.

Posters will be placed around the area advertising that the scheme is in force.

John Kerr, of Glenorchy and Innishail Community Council added: “We all appreciate and support the excellent provision of blue light emergency services in our local area. Rural Watch allows local residents to interact with Police Scotland to increase security and push back the boundaries of isolation and loneliness.

“In doing so those who may be tempted to flout the law will also become aware that they cannot behave in an antisocial or criminal manner without suffering the consequences of their actions.”
