Councillors have approved plans to convert a former whisky and crafts centre in Fort William into 12 affordable flats.
The council’s Lochaber area leader Thomas MacLennan welcomed the “bold design” of the property proposed for the west end of the town’s High Street and overlooking the nearby pier.
“This design has really grown on me,” he said. “It won’t be the easiest site to develop but Highland Council are going to develop it and turn an eyesore into something.”
Planning committee members yesterday backed a revised proposal by the owners of Carrbridge Hotel to add 22 bedrooms.
The two-storey, stand-alone block will be positioned on the northeast corner of the read of the hotel’s car park.
The extension will increase the number of bedrooms to 127, allowing it to cater for 254 guests.
Local councillor Bill Lobban sought a reassurance that the car park could safely accommodate additional coaches and was reassured that fresh analysis of vehicle movements had satisfied council officers.
