Brewing up a taste for ale in Lochaber

Plans are in the pipeline to produce a taste of Lochaber in a glass.

West Highland Brewery (WHB) wants to produce craft ale at Tirindrish Steading in Spean Bridge, which dates from the 1870s.

If the application is successful, the company hopes production at the historic site will eventually increase to 3,000 litres a week.

A spokesman said: “We want to build a thriving craft ale enterprise, distinct to the Lochaber region, which utilises local expertise and resources.

“The brand’s identity will be synonymous with specific themes to the area which will appeal to both local people and visitors alike.

“We will sell from a small retail outlet on the proposed brewery site. Bottled beer will be supplied to the local retail and restaurant market and cask-conditioned ale to specialised outlets as well as pubs and bars.”

The three directors also hope to employ up to eight staff within five years.

The steading, near both the A86 and A82 at Spean Bridge, was previously used as a store and there is car parking available for up to eight cars.

If given the go-ahead by Highland Council, WHB also hopes to target the export market with its Lochaber ale in the future.

Spean Bridge, Roy Bridge and Achnacarry community council offered no objection to the brewery plans at its meeting last week.
