A busy road through Appin in Argyll will be closed on Sunday for up to 10 nights.

Resurfacing work costing £220,000 will begin on the A828 – which joins the A82 near Ballachulish – from 9pm-7am each night, but not during the busier Friday or Saturday evenings.

The resurfacing programme will upgrade a section of the road at Portnacroish in the village to ensure the A828 continues to function safely as well as providing a smoother and safer journey for road users.

But due to restricted road widths, the road will need to be closed at night during working hours to keep road workers and motorists safe during the improvements.

A diversion via the A85 at Connel and A82 at Tyndrum will be signposted. Emergency services will be able to pass through the works at all times and local access will be maintained when it is safe for vehicles to be escorted through the work area.

Signage will be in place at Tyndrum to give advance warning for onward travel.

The road will be open during the daytime, but a 30mph speed restriction will remain in place as motorists will be travelling over an uneven surface.

The improvements have been planned following consultation with the local authority, Transport Scotland, travel operators, local businesses and residents.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “The scheme planned at Portnacroish will improve the road surface for motorists on the A828, creating a much safer and smoother journey.

“We’ve planned the resurfacing to take place overnight to reduce the impact to motorists, and have taken steps to avoid working on the busier Friday and Saturday nights to further limit disruption.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as possible.”
