Lochalsh Junior Pipe Band members and tutors celebrate their achievement at St James Park, Paisley in the British Pipe Band Championships

Young Highland pipers are just champion – and they proved it when they played their hearts out in a top competition.

The Lochalsh Junior Pipe Band travelled to Paisley to take part in the British championships with high hopes of success.

They were not disappointed as the band members were judged clear first place winners in the Novice B section of the contest.

And the youngsters can now proudly call themselves British champions.

Mr Stewart still teaches the pipes and, along with colleague, Drew Caldwell, who passes on his drumming skills to pupils in local schools, both tutor the band and give members individual lessions during their weekly sessions.

And they are justifiably proud of the achievements of the young players.

In a joint statement, they said: “There is a high level of commitment from pupils and families to the work of the band and this has paid off recently with great achievements for such a young group.”

Highland Council’s Music Development Officer, Norman Bolton, added: “We have a tradition of supporting youth music in all its forms right across Highland region and the determination of this group to make the most of opportunities and develop is a testament to the structure in their teaching and the commitment given to many hours of additional work that goes into this level of achievement.

“The aspects of teamwork and discipline involved in participating in a musical activity of this nature allows our young people to develop skills which will stand them in good stead in the wider world of work and community well beyond their years at school.”

The excited members of the band posted on their website: “We want to say a massive thanks to our tutors and a big thanks also to all the parents and members of the community for their continued support of the band.

“Roll on the European championship in Forres.”
