Four million tonnes of rock could be extracted from a Lochaber quarry in order to create freshwater lagoons.
Aggregate Industries have submitted a proposal of planning notice to Highland Council for the work at Glensanda Quarry on the Ardnamurchan peninsula.
The company also intends to hold a public exhibition of the plans at Lochaline Village Hall next month.
The site for the proposed development lies to the west of the quarry and it will be for silt storage and the creation of four finger lagoons.
As well as extracting the rock, water pipes will be installed together with electricity generation and ancillary works.
Glensanda Castle, a medieval tower house, originally the stronghold of the Macleans of Kingairloch, is the only scheduled monument near the site and no other listed buildings are in close proximity.
Glensanda itself is a ‘super quarry’ on the shores of Loch Linnhe. It produces high quality polished granite which is shipped to markets across Northern Europe.
The proposal will go before the South Planning Applications Committee on Tuesday, where members will be able to highlight any issues they wish to be brought to the attention of the applicant before it is submitted for planning permission.
