Oban lifeboat was called out to rescue three people on board a yacht which ran aground near the town on Saturday morning.

Stornoway Coastguard contacted the RNLI crew when a call was received from a 44-foot yacht which had grounded just north of Dunstaffnage Marina.

The yacht was listing heavily with the tide still dropping when the lifeboat ‘Mora Edith MacDonald’ arrived at the scene at 10.40am.

The lifeboat’s daughter craft, also known as the xp boat, was launched to assist the people on board to put out an anchor in order to secure the vessel until it was possible to refloat it later in the day.

With the yacht and the crew safe, the lifeboat left the scene and returned back to Oban by 11.45am.

A spokeswoman for Oban lifeboat said: “The lifeboat relaunched on service later at 2.54pm to assist with refloating the yacht.

“With the tide now rising, the vessel was refloated and the anchor recovered with the help of the lifeboat’s xp boat.

“With all safe and well, the lifeboat escorted the yacht into Dunstaffnage Marina where she was safely alongside by 4pm.

“The lifeboat then returned to the station where she was refuelled and made ready for service again by 4.35pm.”
