Thurso Lifeboat has been called out

Two shellfish divers have been taken to hospital after being pulled out of the water by rescue teams off the coast of Barra in the Outer Hebrides.

The pair were reported missing near at 11.20am by a local ferry boat skipper near Castlebay who noticed they had gone into the water but failed to resurface.

The Barra lifeboat was launched along with a local coastguard rescue team and the coastguard helicopter from Stornoway.

A statement released by UK coastguard this afternoon reads: “At around 1pm, Barra RNLI lifeboat reported to the coastguard that two casualties had been recovered from the water and taken to Barra Hospital.”

Their condition is unknown at this stage.
