Police have issued a warning after counterfeit bank notes were circulating in Caithness.
Members of the public who work in shops or others jobs where they regularly handle cash have been urged to be on their guard after several reports were made of fake money being used across the county.
The notes involved are Bank of England £20 notes, which on examination are found to be fake and all bear the same serial number.
Sergeant Brian Hamilton said: “We have had a number of reports made about the use of this money, while we are also aware of other incidents which have not been reported to police.
“Therefore, we are advising those members of the public who deal with cash sales to bear this in mind and thoroughly check bank notes matching this description before handing over change or completing the transaction.
“Anyone who deliberately uses counterfeit currency is committing a crime and we will investigate all instances reported to us.
“Anyone who suspects they may have received one of these notes or who has information about those using them should call police on 101, quoting reference NJ5445/17, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
