‘There is no safe limit’: Police drink and drug warning ahead of Hogmanay celebrations

Police are warning revelers in the Highlands and islands of the dangers with drink and drug driving this New Year’s Eve.

Officers will be on watch for anyone suspected of being over the limit with mobile and static patrols throughout the festive period.

Sergeant Gregor Hay of the Road Policing Unit said: “Despite the consequences driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, we still catch drivers who ignore the risks and get behind the wheel.

“Our advice is to make travel plans in advance so that temptations to drive under the influence is removed. If you are planning to drive then it is best not to consume any alcohol at all – there is no safe limit.

“Anyone caught over the limit will be arrested and then runs the risk of losing their licence and their vehicle.”

Hay also spoke about the dangers facing the following day: “This weekend many people will attend parties and events to celebrate Hogmanay and New Year’s Day.

“I would urge people to take into account the period of time alcohol remains in a person’s system the morning after.”

If you are concern about a suspected drink or drug driver contact 999 if it is an emergency or 101 to help road policing officers keep people safe.
