Ahead of the recognised Volunteers Week, running from Friday 1 June to Thursday 7 June, NHS Highland have paid tribute to the work of its numerous volunteers.

Iain McConnell, volunteer services manager for NHS Highland, said: “Volunteering within NHS Highland continues to grow with staff and patients benefiting regularly from the support of committed volunteers.

“Our volunteers help as far north as Thurso, as far south as Fort William and in areas in-between so the impact of volunteering can be felt across the whole of the Highlands.

“The team of volunteers we have here in Highland are great to work with and I would like to say thanks to every volunteer who supports us. The support they give is valued by everyone involved.”

The role of volunteers across the NHS ranges from aiding with mealtimes, community reception roles and breastfeeding peer support.

Alice Smith has volunteered at the Tain Health Centre for over three years now, having previously been involved in the voluntary sector for over 30 years.

She said: “We’ve got a really good team here in Tain and all of us come with a range of experience of working with the public.

“We’re always looking for new volunteers. We have a great team but having that extra bit of cover and even company when you are on a shift would be good. We all enjoy the roles we have here and find what we do very worthwhile.”
