Lochaber Leisure Centre have reported fantastic uptake of their new swimming lessons delivered through the medium of Gaelic.
More than 30 young people have enrolled in the programme, the first of its kind across Scotland.
Gary Davidson, manager of Lochaber Leisure Centre, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Gaelic speaking Leisure Centre users, especially as Bun-Sgoil Ghaidhlig Loch Abar is now established in the area, and Gaelic is being used in the community within other sporting activities, including shinty, football, and outdoor educational activities.
“We are pleased to be able to offer the lessons through Gaelic as this will enhance the linguistic skills of Gaelic learners and the young Gaelic speakers.”
The idea came about through the thoughts of student teacher, Eilidh McArthur, who combines her studies with working at Lochaber Leisure Centre. At present there are currently 11 Gaelic speaking staff at the Leisure Centre, with many of these qualified as swimming instructors, allowing the lessons to take place in Gaelic.
