A830 road improvement project to take place around Glenfinnan

Work is set to begin later this month on a project worth in the region of £165,000 aimed at improving the road surface on the A830 around the Glenfinnan area.

A 700 meter section of road will see significant improvement works on either side of the village of Glenfinnan, creating a smoother and safer carriageway.

Eddie Ross, of Bear Scotland, said: “These essential works will improve the road surface on the approaches to Glenfinnan, helping to remove any defects in the carriageway.

“We’ve taken steps to reduce disruption as much as possible by carrying out these works overnight and avoiding working on Friday and Saturday nights.

“Teams will do all they can to complete the works as quickly and safely as possible, and we encourage motorists to plan their journey in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website.”

Works are set to get underway on Sunday 29 July with workers operating between 7pm and 7am each night for five consecutive nights.

In order to ensure full protection of the workforce, the A830 will be closed in both directions during the working hours. Access to properties and businesses within the site will be maintained during the period of closure, with vehicles seeking through access being escorted when safety allows.

Emergency vehicles will be allowed access at all times.

A 30mph speed limit will remain in place out with working hours; however, traffic management procedures will be lifted.

The improvement works come as community leaders have called for a reduction in the speed limit within the West Highland village.

Currently a 60mph speed limit is in place; however, calls have been made to reduce the limit to 30mph in order to protect locals and visitors wishing to capture a glimpse of the Glenfinnan Monument and the Glenfinnan Viaduct, famed for its feature in the Harry Potter films.

Duncan Gibson, chair of Glenfinnan Community Council, added: “The road here is still a 60mph road and it is dangerous for visitors to cross.

“It is also dangerous for local children to cross this 60mph stretch to get to the school bus in the morning.

“The Glenfinnan Community Council has fought many years to get the speed limit dropped to 30mph but without any success.”
