Farm worker Hamish Smith had recently passed his test when police caught him doing over 100mph on the A9.
Inverness Sheriff Court heard yesterday that the 20-year-old from Achernach Farmhouse in Grantown-on-Spey had been seen by an unmarked police car leaving the Kessock Bridge roundabout and travelling at excessive speed on November 15 last year.
The court was told that officers pursued it for five miles before stopping Smith’s car at Moy.
Defence solicitor Clare Russell said: “He was a new driver at the time and this has been a short sharp lesson for him.”
Fining Smith £400 and endorsing his licence with five penalty points for careless driving, Sheriff Gary Aitken told Smith he was lucky he did not kill himself or someone else.
“If you had hit a deer or another car at that speed, you would not be here.” the Sheriff added.
