Plans for a two-screen cinema in a Highland town have been well received by a west coast community.

The proposal for Fort William’s Highland Cinema and café bar are on show to the public until Friday October 5, between 11am until 7pm, in the former DV8 building in Cameron Square.

Over the next few days the project manager and developer will be on hand to answer any questions the public may have.

Architect Rory Flyn from Dualchas said he was excited to be involved with the cinema. He said: “We work all over the Highlands and in some very rural areas so it is great to be working on a town centre project that will have a major impact on the look and development of Fort William for decades to come.”

The drawings showed the plans for a front area café, that turns into a bar in the evening – and in the back, two cinema screens with seating for 98 in one, and 70 in the second screen.

The venue hopes to show mainstream and art house films for all the family.

“This is going to be a well-used community building that welcomes residents on a daily basis for generations of families.

“We wanted to build the idea of community space into the front of the building – and we have used the ideas of the community halls you see around the Highlands. There will be a wide open space when you enter into the building.

“In the back of the building we have been thinking along the lines of the large open spaces of whisky distilleries.”

Project manager Peter Scott Aiton from development company Galbraiths said: “It is an exceptionally exciting project for the area.

“We have had very positive feedback. The cinema will be a much needed asset for the whole community.

“We hope to be open in the summer of 2020.”

Developer Angus MacDonald said: “I am delighted to be bringing the cinema project to Lochaber. We are really pleased with the feedback from everyone who has come along to tell us what they think.”

One visitor to the exhibition, Maggie Wilson from Ballachulish, said: “I think it is great and it will increase the number of people coming into the town at all times of day and night.”
