Warning about use of snares after incident near Nairn

Nairn police have issued a warning about the dangers of illegally set snares after the discovery of a trap set in the Little Kildrummie area near the town.

A domestic cat was found trapped in the snare last month.

The animal was found to have no lasting injuries after being checked by a vet.

Officers are now urging people to be aware of the safe use of snares following the incident.

Constable Lindsey Baldie said: “The use of snares is the subject of strict legislation and it is extremely important that anyone using them does so safely, legally and humanely.

“Illegally setting a snare like this or failing to dispose of it safely is an extremely reckless act.

“Fortunately the cat caught in this trap had no lasting injury but it was an extremely distressing incident for both the animal and his owners.

“We are continuing with inquiries into this incident and I would ask anyone who could assist with information to call police on 101 using reference NM2657/18.”

Further information about the safe and legal use of snares can be found at  www.PAW.Scotland.gov.uk
