Seasonal visitors to the Cairngorms National Park can now get all the information they need from their phone, thanks to a mobile app that is winning prizes.

The SnowRoads Scenic Route is a mobile phone tool to help visitors explore the area through audio, video and 360° panoramic photos as they travel through the heart of the Cairngorms National Park.

SnowRoads has just won the Innovation in Tourism Award at the Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Awards (ACSTA) and will go on to represent the region in the Scottish Thistle Awards next year.

The SnowRoads app aims to catapult the already iconic 90-mile journey, linking Blairgowrie in Perthshire (A93) to Grantown-on-Spey in the Highlands (A939) via Glenshee, Braemar, Ballater and Tomintoul, into a destination in its own right.

A £245,000 grant from Scottish Enterprise was awarded under the Tourism Destination Development Fund towards this £315,000 initiative which is being led by the Cairngorms Business Partnership (CBP) with partners the Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA).

SnowRoads project manager Jennifer Green said: “We have created a digital toolkit for a truly immersive visitor experience to highlight this destination road which will have a major positive economic impact on communities and businesses along the route.

“We know we have created something authentic that local folk will enjoy as much of the content has been built around local stories and legends unearthed through a major community engagement project where we asked local people what they would like to see promoted as part of the project.”
