Cauldeen Primary School in Inverness celebrated its 50th year in operation over the weekend and marked the occasion by officially declaring its new state-of-the-art additional support needs building open.

The Butterfly Rooms are set to provide children with additional learning support needs with two sensory rooms and an outdoor play area.

A kitchen has also been created that will be shared with the main primary school.

Councillor Bet McAllister and broadcaster Nicola McAlley unveiled a plaque to declare the school officially open on Saturday.

Mrs McAllister, the depute provost of Inverness, said: “It is a special opportunity to celebrate the past and look forward to the future of Cauldeen Primary School with its special new facility that with greatly benefit pupils with additional support needs.”

The new Butterfly Rooms will replace the Drummond Special School’s former nursery provision.

At present six pupils currently attend the facility with the capacity for 32 pupils to accommodate the new building.

Nicola McAlley added: “I know from personal experience how important a facility the new nursery is and the excellent, caring work that the staff undertake there, so I am delighted to be involved. I know that it will make a big difference to so many children for years to come.”

Pupils performed a play on Saturday where primary seven pupil Poppy Earl played a time traveller, taking attendees on a journey through the schools past and exploring the theme of random acts of kindness, a theme that has run through the school since it opened its doors 50 years ago.

Current staff member Catriona Cameron started school at Cauldeen in 1968 and was the first person Poppy met, before meeting Caroline McLaughlin, now a teacher at the school, who was in primary seven in 1975.

A golden woods has also been created where children at the school have planted hazel, silver birch, hawthorn, rowan trees and daffodils around the school. Five members of staff are Forest School trained ensuring regular outdoor learning experiences for the children.

Staff and parents gathered for teas and coffees on Saturday as the opening of the new facility was celebrated in style.
