A potentially life-saving jail sentence was imposed by a Sheriff on a drug addict who said she would not survive the New Year if she remained at liberty.
Julia Edgar of Woodlands View, Inverness, made the appeal for custody through her solicitor Clare Russell at Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday.
Ms Russell said her 25-year-old client, who admitted two charges of shoplifting on Thursday from Marks and Spencer and Smyths, had had a relapse into drug use.
The lawyer told Sheriff Margaret Neilson: “She has lost a lot of weight and doesn’t think she will make it into the New Year if she isn’t jailed. She will be properly fed there and looked after.”
The sheriff agreed, commenting that the young woman, who admitted previous convictions, was “the worst I have seen her”.
She imposed a four-month jail sentence.
