The board of David MacBrayne Limited has announced the appointment of a new group chief executive with Duncan Mackison set to take up the post at the beginning of March.
The parent company of CalMac Ferries Ltd, Argyll Ferries Ltd and Solent Gateway Ltd made the announcement yesterday as it anticipates a challenging year ahead, with the addition of Mr Mackison to the group’s board of directors coming at a time when CalMac Ferries faces pressure over its ability to provide vital ferry links to communities across Scotland.
In December, it was established that taxpayers had forked out more than £8million above the £128.3 million Scottish Government subsidy to run the ferry operator, with concerns also raised over the firms ageing fleet.
Commenting on the appointment, David McGibbon, chairman of David MacBrayne Limited, said: “The Board is delighted to announce this appointment. Duncan brings considerable marine experience to this role.”
Mr Mackison, a former Royal Marine commando officer, recently served as the managing director of Serco Defence, where he was entrusted with handling over 60 contracts in maritime, aviation and satellite services, combined with looking after a staff base of over 3000 employees.
Mr McGibbon added: “Duncan also has considerable experience and a strong track record in delivering service contracts to both central and local Government.
“Looking ahead, the Group faces many challenges. We will continue to deliver ferry services to the Clyde and Hebrides through our subsidiary company, CalMac Ferries Limited.
“In addition, we will also be addressing the forthcoming tender process for the new contract to deliver ferry services to the Orkney and Shetland Islands, a process which has already begun.
“We look forward to welcoming Duncan.”
