A documentary produced by second-year pupils from the Nicolson Institute has scooped a top prize at the Gaelic film awards in Glasgow last weekend, after portraying the tale of Norman Mackenzie from Ness, who was aboard the Iolaire on the yacht’s fateful night.

The tale, named A-Mach à Uchd a’ Bhàis, won the Film G award for Best Gaelic Script.

Solas, directed by Lana Pheutan from Skye, took home the best drama and best performance awards, with lead actor and former Nicolson Institute pupil Mairi MacLennan scooping the prize for best senior performance for her moving portrayal of domestic abuse victim Jenna.

Councillor Angus McCormack, chairman of Education and Children’s Services at the Western Isles Council said: “I am very proud of all our young people who were nominated for various categories and I am delighted that schools in the Western Isles are taking such an active role in both learning and developing pupils’ skills in Gaelic, drama and in media.

“I would like to convey my sincere congratulations to The Nicolson Institute pupils who were worthy winners in their categories.”

Elsewhere, in the senior’s category, comedy film Pìos Math Duff, which centres on a new island dating site, seen the group win the Gaelic award for fluent speakers, with Katie Gillies taking home the best performance trophy.
