Police closed a road in a north town when a piece of harling came loose from a chimney stack, sparking concerns that it could fall on passing pedestrians.

The incident was reported at 2.40pm with a fire crew from Kingussie attending the building on the town’s High Street, followed by a height appliance from Inverness.

The stray harling was assessed by the Inverness crew to ensure the safety of passers-by, before being removed alongside 10 chimney pots.

Firefighters used small tools to remove the debris, with a road closure put in place between Gynack Street and King Street whilst the area was made safe.

Nobody was injured as a result of the incident.

A police spokesman confirmed the road fully reopened shortly after 5.40pm, with diversions put in place to allow motorists within the vicinity access around the scene.

He added: “We were made aware of the incident; however, it was referred on to the fire and rescue service.

“Personnel were in attendance but more in a supporting role to the other organisations.”

A spokeswoman for Bear Scotland said:  “We were alerted to some fallen masonry on to the A86 in Kingussie earlier this afternoon by the police, who requested us to help close the road for safety.
