A 26-year-old Inverness man inundated his former partner with messages and texts and then abused her in the street.
Mark McDade, of Wyvis Place, committed the offences between May 25 and June 17 this year. Yesterday at Inverness Sheriff Court, he admitted a charge under new Domestic Abuse legislation of engaging in a course of conduct which was abusive of his partner.
Fining him £810 and imposing a three year non-harassment order, Sheriff Robert Macdonald told McDade: “This is exactly the type of behaviour this legislation was brought in to stop.”
Fiscal depute Alex Swain told the court that McDade’s partner had blocked him from contacting her on social media on June 7 but she continued to receive emails from him.
A few days later, an attempt to make the break-up more amicable failed when she made it clear that she did not want to rekindle the relationship, Ms Swain added.
“An argument started. He begged her to come back to him, and then shouted and swore. She tried to contact her mother on her phone but he thought she was phoning someone to come and get him and he attempted to slap the phone out of her hand.
“She went into a local shop where he shouted an insult at her.”
The court heard he also shouted an insult as she left a bar with friends and banged on the window of a house she visited.
Defence solicitor Natalie Paterson said: “He struggled with the break-up but now accepts it is at an end. He has no intention of ever contacting her again.”
