Argyll pupils have their say on school dinners

Pupils from across Argyll and Bute will continue to have a say on what is on their school menus.

The primary school meal menu is revised twice a year in consultation with the children through a number of pupil focus groups.

By encouraging pupils to contribute, it helps them to feel valued and highlights the importance of having a healthy, balanced diet. Teaching staff, catering staff, NHS dieticians and parents also contribute.

Argyll and Bute Council’s policy lead for education, Councillor Yvonne McNeilly, said: “By giving pupils an active role in choosing what foods are on the menu, it not only helps build their confidence, but enables them to make their voices heard.

“We all want the best start for our children and young people, so it is vital they know the importance of making healthy choices and eating balanced, nutritious meals.

“By encouraging our young people to become involved in things which affect them, we are showing them that we respect their opinions.

“This in turn helps them to succeed in school because they feel respected and valued. By providing healthy teaching habits to our young people at an early age, it encourages them to continue to eat healthy throughout their lives.

“Our catering staff all do a tremendous job and I look forward to seeing what delicious meals are on offer this session.”
