A special service is being held at Inverness Cathedral on Sunday to mark its 150th anniversary.
Members of the congregation are expected to turn out in their droves to mark the momentous occasion during a Choral Evensong at the cathedral from 3pm.
The Cathedral Choir will perform and ‘One thing have I desired of the Lord’ by Gordon Tocher, the Cathedral organist, will get an airing.
Renditions of ‘Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis’ by Harwood and Responses by Smith will also be performed with the Anthem ‘Blessed city, heavenly Salem’ by Bairstow completing the afternoon’s choral music.
Built from 1866 to 1869 the cathedral on the banks of the River Ness held its first Evensong on September 1, 1869 whereby more than 1200 filled the cathedral to mark the momentous occasion.
A selection of songs from the first Evensong will also be included in Sunday’s programme to reflect on the rich history of the 19th century cathedral.
A sermon will also be preached by the Most Revd Mark J Strange, the Bishop of the Diocese of Moray, Ross and Caithness and the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church reflecting on the cathedral’s period of worship.
Dozens of individuals and clergy from congregations across the Diocese will join members of the Cathedral congregation and the Cathedral Chapter during the service alongside the city Provost Councillor Helen Carmichael, council representatives and representatives of the Lord Lieutenants.
Local business and schools are also expected to attend to mark the Cathedral’s milestone anniversary.
The service is one in a line of events taking place this year to mark its anniversary, including a talk by Calum Maclead, Conservation Architect of MAAC Studios on the architect Alexander Ross on Saturday, September 7.
