A grieving mum has spoken of her “torment” after a north man admitted causing the death of her son in a horror Highland crash.

Kyle Robertson, 20, died in a collision on the A835 Inverness to Ullapool road in Ross-shire in February 2018, after his car crossed a railway line and hit a tree.

Yesterday at the High Court in Edinburgh, Beauly man Mikey Durdle admitted causing the death of Mr Robertson by driving dangerously and at excessive speed.

Sentence was deferred but the 23-year-old was warned by judge Lord Arthurson that he faced a substantial jail sentence.

Last night, Lorraine Robertson said: “For the last 23 months we have been plagued with unanswered questions.

“It is tremendously cruel to have your child taken from you in such circumstances and to not have a clear understanding as to how, or why, is tormenting. It has tormented my thoughts ever since.

“When I received the date of the trial it felt as if I had been hit by a tsunami and I collapsed at my husband’s feet.

“You think you are prepared but in reality every piece of news or next stage of the police investigation feels like a tonne of bricks falling on to your shoulders.

“Kyle was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a baby and his father and I treasured every day we had with him.

“We always thought we would get a chance to say goodbye to the lad with the unforgettable smile, but that was sadly taken away from us.

“Our son loved his life, he was happy, and was a hard-working young man, with so many friends.

“We hope that today will bring some peace to our lives, and we continue to hold on to that hope.”
