Plans to revamp a run-down area of Stornoway are advancing after a £1.4million funding boost from the Scottish Government.
Developers have outlined plans to create a new commercial zone within the town and provide a productive use for a derelict 5.5 acre plot tucked away behind the existing buildings between Sandwick Road and Island Road.
The proposed redevelopment will play a major part in the wider regeneration ambitions for Stornoway with a focus of improvements to the Newton district.
Up to 100 jobs could be created through the venture, which would lead to the creation of the new commercial buildings alongside associated lights, roads and pavements.
Local haulage company, DR Macleod, is behind the idea, which has gained “substantial interest” from new business start-ups as well as local companies seeking expansion.
The firm said: “This allows us to fast-track the proposal.
“Things have been in limbo since last summer and we could not do anything until this grant application was determined.
“Now, we can move to applying for planning permission and hope to advance forward as quickly as we can.”
The company added: “This development would bring a disused site into purposeful use, providing new, modern commercial facilities for both new and existing businesses in the Western Isles.
“We believe the proposed development would bring a vitally needed boost to the local economy and the surrounding area, encouraging new ventures and growth of existing businesses whilst providing a significant boost to employment.”
